The Financial Times covers Bankside Yards’ transformation of London’s South Bank

October 5, 2024

In this weekend’s edition of the Financial Times, journalist Dominic Bradbury explores London’s Southbank and highlights how PLP Architecture’s masterplan for Bankside Yards is shaping its evolution as one of the capital’s leading cultural destinations.

The new neighbourhood is quickly coming to life, with the second building, Opus, currently under construction. Designed by PLP Architecture, Opus will become central London’s tallest residential tower when it completes in 2026. This 50-storey structure follows the earlier success of Arbor, a next-generation workplace that opened last year, also designed by PLP.

The masterplan includes eight buildings and eight distinct public spaces, opening up new routes along the Thames that connect cultural landmarks to the east and west. Alongside Opus and Arbor, Bankside Yards will feature further residential buildings, a Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and revitalised historic arches offering both cultural and commercial spaces.

“I feel this is just the beginning for the South Bank as a neighbourhood, but its success will depend on … creating truly mixed-use communities”
