The New York Times explore sustainability at Bankside Yards
September 25, 2024
The New York Times recently paid a visit to our site at Bankside Yards, to unpack the theory behind its pioneering 5th generation energy network.
This ambient loop system, the first of its kind in the UK, is a combined heating and cooling network that can balance energy between the masterplan’s diverse mix of buildings and uses.
The system spans the full hypermixed 5.5-acres and 8 buildings at Bankside Yards, which hopes to be a model for accelerating decarbonisation efforts in the UK and beyond. This is no mean feat, considering that heating homes alone produces almost a fifth of all greenhouse gases in the United Kingdom.
So, why are similar systems are not being rolled out at speed and scale everywhere?
According to the article, little government effort has been applied to promote the latest solutions in privately owned new construction and retrofits, or indeed in government-owned buildings.
Additionally, the rollout has been hindered by a lack of awareness among both policymakers and everyday consumers.
Once Bankside Yards is completed in 2029, facility managers will analyse performance data to enhance the system’s efficiency, while weather forecasts will be utilised to optimise operations even further.
