Tianjin Binhai International Airport
Tianjin, China

The new Tianjin Binhai International Airport (IATA: TSN, ICAO: ZBTJ) is located east of Tianjin, in Dongli District in Northeastern China. The design of the project, won in an international competition, provides for the phased expansion of the development. Besides the new signature terminal building that serves as a gateway to this fourth largest city in China, the scheme includes the design of new runways, a new automated people mover system (APM) and main rail connection. The phased expansion will provide a state-of-the-art terminal building that triples the airport’s current capacity to a scale similar to that of Schiphol Airport, when completed.

The main terminal is approached via a new park. The drop off is beneath a brightly covered kite-like overhang and the departures level, with its open and translucent roof, feels like an extension of the outside space. The path from the check-in to the gate is straightforward, with all circulation at the same level. Passengers leave the holding room via a curved ramp that offers airside views. Arriving passengers also enjoy airside views as they approach the terminal building through the double height space.

The celebratory reference to kite making derives from the famous traditional Chinese folk handicraft which originated during the Spring and Autumn Period of the 8th century.
