An integrated healthcare and research campus in Whitechapel brings together NHS services, specialist accommodation and public realm to meet urgent clinical needs, support key workers and unlock new green spaces for the local community.

Forming part of the wider Barts Life Sciences Cluster, the campus supports new models of NHS care, research and innovation while responding directly to the needs of staff, patients and the surrounding neighbourhood. The development represents a £0.75bn investment into Whitechapel, projected to add £1bn annually to the UK’s GVA and create 1,325 new jobs.

The development enables key clinical services to move into a flagship, research-led and patient-focused facility, freeing up space within the Royal London Hospital, one of the city’s busiest, for additional beds and operating theatres. Alongside NHS services, flexible workspaces – 10% of which are affordable – support collaboration between clinicians, researchers and life sciences organisations, strengthening links between care, education and innovation.

PLP Architecture played a leading role in the campus and is responsible for two key buildings. Building G is a 64,427 m2 facility that brings together clinical services, education and research within a publicly accessible environment. The building includes an 800 m2 event space for up to 500 people, a museum, a new home for the London Air Ambulance, and a shared rooftop terrace for NHS staff and building users that features a 100m running track, a sports pitch and panoramic views across the city.

Building D1 provides 167, much-needed, affordable specialist accommodation for NHS staff, arranged around generous shared kitchens, lounges and communal spaces that support wellbeing, rest and connection.
