PLP Architecture were commissioned to design the Worldmall, a novel concept mega-retail facility at Aerocity’s Gateway District in Delhi, India. This new mall creates a next generation of retail, dining and entertainment facilities that stands to compete on the global stage. At 196,000sqm, this new retail experience will be India’s largest mall when completed. Our design vision was driven by the idea of replacing the traditional shopping mall with a place to meet, exchange and connect, galvanising the latest trends in retail and harnessing the power of digital experiences and technology.
Dubbed ‘The 9th City of Delhi’, Aerocity is set to become India’s first sustainable Transit Oriented Development with over 30 million square feet of mixed-use commercial development and a working population of over 100,000. Within the new district, PLP Architecture have designed over 7 million square feet of mixed-use office, retail and hospitality space across a number of different sites
The retail concept introduces a development that offers three different experiences, ranging from luxury, affordable luxury and family-focused retail, dining and entertainment; all within the same mega structure. The focus was on creating an experiential and vibrant flagship global retail destination that benefits from its international connectivity due to its proximity to the international airport and unique location.
To integrate the mega-retail facility within its exemplary urban setting, with its emphasis on high-quality public realm, the luxury component was inverted inside out, providing luxury brands with a presence on the street with distinctive facades and direct relationship to the streetscape. The main retail boulevard is clad in natural stone, creating an elegant and classic façade rhythm that enables luxury stores to personalise their shopfronts while retaining the coherence of the overall design.
As online shopping continues to dominate consumer spending, Worldmall offers a refreshing alternative that redefines the traditional retail experience. Since the inception of shopping malls in the 1950s, their core concept has remained largely unchanged – until now.
With a forward-thinking approach to design, Worldmall breaks away from the conventional, enclosed mall structure and instead embraces a more regionally inspired, nature-integrated environment. By incorporating biophilic design principles, abundant greenery, and natural materials, the mall fosters a deeper connection between people and nature. The thoughtfully designed spaces encourage visitors to step out of their cars and immerse themselves in a walkable urban oasis.
Through placemaking strategies and eco-friendly environments, Worldmall enhances the visitor experience, encouraging longer stays and deeper engagement with the space. This innovative blend of commerce and nature not only enriches the shopping experience but also promotes well-being, sustainability, and a renewed sense of community.
