Mandarin Oriental Signs Pre-Development Agreement for PLP-designed Luxury Hotel and Residences in Bankside Yards

July 12, 2023

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has signed a pre-development hotel management agreement with Samson House Ltd. (SHL), creating the opportunity for a new PLP Architecture-designed luxury hotel and branded residences at Bankside Yards on London’s South Bank.

The new Mandarin Oriental Bankside will occupy a standalone 33-storey building within the wider Bankside Yards masterplan situated between the Tate Modern art gallery and the Southbank Centre—the two together being Europe’s largest centre for the arts. Both the hotel itself and the wider Bankside Yards neighbourhood are designed by PLP Architecture.

PLP’s design for the hotel has planning consent, which was obtained in December 2020 by London-based developer Native Land on behalf of SHL. Subject to final non material planning amendments to meet operator requirements, the hotel will include171 guestrooms, and 70 branded Residences at Mandarin Oriental.

SHL is owned by an international real estate consortium including Hotel Properties Limited, Native Land Limited and Amcorp Properties Berhad.

Located on the banks of the River Thames, Mandarin Oriental Bankside is part of the wider Bankside Yards development, which is centred around the historic railway arches that run through the heart of the site. The property will benefit from being part of what is planned to be the UK’s first operationally fossil fuel-free major mixed-use development.

The agreement envisages a hotel that will include four restaurants, including one on the 19th floor with views across the city, as well as function rooms, a spa, lap pool, fitness centre and an outdoor terrace. The Residences will offer access to the hotel services, as well as a sky lobby lounge and private roof garden.
