Karl Sharro

Partner

Karl is a Partner, urban designer and architectural writer with more than 28 years’ experience in architectural practice. His work encompasses a broad range of projects from large masterplans to mixed-use developments to high-rise buildings, and from life science to educational institutions, from residential to retail and entertainment destinations and public spaces. His experience is worldwide, having designed some of PLP’s most significant developments in the UK, Middle East, Europe and India.

His work is characterised by its focus on innovation, architectural identity and the creation of vibrant and liveable cities. At their core, Karl’s projects are deeply rooted in local context and its futuristic transformation. Notably, his work in the Middle East is inspired by a life-long passion for understanding the urban and cultural context of the region, as will be seen in his ongoing research ‘The New Arab City’.

Karl was the PLP design leader on the Parco Romana project, an urban-scale redevelopment project in Milan’s Porta Romana district, which PLP won in an international competition as part of a global design team. His work has been instrumental in the transformation of Aerocity Delhi, where he has designed the entirety of the upcoming mixed-use Gateway District, already recognised as a global destination.

Karl publicly leads the discourse about life in the Middle East, regularly appearing on TV, live events and in writing; discussing the cultural context of the region. He has written a pamphlet on the continuing relevance of Islamic Architecture today. His idea for a ‘1000 Mile-City’ along the East Mediterranean coast was broadcast on the BBC’s This Week’s World as part of the ‘Think Again’ strand, exploring radical ideas for the future.
