Yuyao International City of Culture and Arts, Yuyao, China

PLP Architecture won the competition for the masterplanning design of the Yuyao Internation City of Culture and Arts. The birthplace of Hemudu protoculture, and hosting important archaeological sites dating back to the Yue Kin Celadon culture and Yao River ancient culture – Yuyao is one of the most historically significant cities in China.

The project accommodates 25 museums and performing arts centres, research and education facilities, an artist village, commercial facilities, cultural retail, hotels and a residential zone.

Aoyama Retail Development, Tokyo, Japan

An innovative new retail experience, this curving glazed building spreads over three undulating levels to bring visual intrigue to an historic Tokyo neighbourhood. The ground floor is visually open, with a large and column-free space providing a dynamic area for retail or f+b options. The the first is more enclosed to allow more private functions to take place, such as back-of-house, kitchens and or client meeting rooms. The rooftop is crowned with a planted roofscape, accessible to the street via a curving staircase and helping to increase the neighbourhood’s green appearance.

Hotel Ningbo, Ningbo, China

The design reflects the hotel’s significant location within the emerging ecological corridor in the Eastern New Town, a representational centre for natural renewal in the heart of the city of Ningbo.

Chunxi Lu Commercial Complex

Osong Biovalley Masterplan, Korea

In an attempt to decentralise its national government, South Korea is building Sejong City, a new administrative capital in the centre of the country. Osong Biovalley forms a satellite of this new town, and a hub for the biotechnology industry close to central government. PLP and Tomoon Architect’s entry into an international competition for the Osong Masterplan reimagines the structure of a Korean city to create new forms of collectivity for a research oriented community, breaking the mould of traditional science parks by preserving nature amidst a dense urban environment.

Jamsil, Seoul, Korea

Our proposal for the Jamsil Sports Complex masterplan in Seoul, operates simultaneously at mega-large and infinitesimally small scales to introduce a new urban ligament based on the city’s hillside alleyways. Connecting the site with Gangnam to the west, the Golmok Bridge establishes a primary experiential conduit through Jamsil as a counterpoint to the oversized, generic superblock perimeter streets. Around this conduit, three distinct neighbourhoods, galvanized around two retained stadia and a proposed convention centre, irrigate the bridge with activity.
